Mapping the Holocaust: Using GIS in Oral History
Track: Using GIS in Libraries & Museums
Author(s): Jamie Wraight

Since 2000, the Voice/Vision Holocaust Survivor Oral History Archive has used ArcView to produce maps that accompany each Holocaust survivor interview that the project has transcribed and made available digitally via the World Wide Web. The use of GIS to present this important spatial data has helped make the Voice/Vision Archive an important source of historical and geographic data pertaining to the Holocaust. This paper will review some aspects of the development of this facet of the archive, as well as talk about the importance of spatial representation vis á vis Holocaust Survivor interviews. It will also discuss and explore potential uses for GIS technology in relation to Holocaust studies.
