Abstract
Learning GIS Through a Community Project Focus Track: Community Projects and Partnerships Author(s): David Wicks, Shawn Canaday , Keith Meador, Shannon Gilkey The Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) have four high schools that offer GIS course work and one offering a fully developed career pathway. For this work, JCPS were recognized in 2002 with the Esri Special Achievement in GIS award. Lately, we have focused on developing Community-based initiatives in order to bring GIS to life. CityGreen and Central High School: Central, a historically black high school, is working with CityGreen to develop an urban tree survey to help focus the county's urban forestry initiatives. Mapping our Parks--Doss High School: Students from Doss have been working to develop Internet mapping web sites of Louisville's Metro Parks and Urban Trail systems. The session will conclude with a discussion of other initiatives that the schools have tried over the years and opportunities for participants to discuss what may have been successful in their locales.
