The TDSB Secondary Success Indicators: A Geospatial Cohort Analysis, 2003-2004
Track: GIS for Administration & Planning
Author(s): Robert Brown, Mark Lowry

The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) is the largest school board in Canada and one of the largest in North America. The TDSB Secondary Success Indicators are a comprehensive set of annual indicators on key aspects of TDSB secondary achievement. These include credit and mark outcomes, graduation, dropout, and postsecondary attainment. All secondary students present in Fall 2003 (N = 90,458) will be geocoded by postal code of student residence, and achievement and other information from the SPSS dataset exported and then joined. In addition, student achievement data will be aggregated to the Census Tract level (N = 500 CT's in Toronto). Spatial analyses will be through ArcGIS 9. Analysis will concentrate on two key themes: determining the degree to which previously-observed Toronto spatial patterns have been replicated through academic achievement; and examining the relationship of aggregated TDSB student data to 2001 Census data.
