Abstract
Louisiana Coastal Erosion: 100+ Years of Land-Use and Land-Cover Change Track: Teaching with GIS Author(s): Lionel Lyles, Fulbert Namwamba There are 160,000 oil and gas wells in the Louisiana coastal wetlands. This vast number is the dominant landuse. Annual oil and gas production accounts for $6.3 and $10.3 billion respectively. Significant land loss has occurred during the past 100+ years. Channeling is mainly responsible. As it is, Louisiana loses 1 acre of land every 24 minutes. Without any significant intervention, an additional 700 square miles could potentially be lost. This land loss and vegetation change are not random occurrences but parallel oil and gas production in the Louisiana coastal wetlands. GIS and remote sensing data will be used to demonstrate how oil and gas production drives Louisiana coastal erosion.
