GIS 101: Applications for Teaching GIS in K-12
Track: Teacher Education and Educational Research
Author(s): Barbaree Duke, Shannon White

Don't reinvent the wheel! Have a conversation with other K-12 GIS teachers about what has worked for teaching and integrating GIS. Drawing on our personal experiences in the classroom, we will facilitate a discussion of questions, concerns and issues facing the K-12 GIS teacher. Demonstrations of "tried and true" activities and techniques for integrating and teaching GIS along with an exploration of Internet resources, free applications and existing lesson plans in teaching and integrating GIS will be the included in our session. Additionally, we will offer an outline of skills that are key to teaching GIS. If you are new to teaching or integrating GIS, this is the session for you.
