Abstract
GIS and Modeling in the Middle and High School Classroom Track: Teacher Education and Educational Research Author(s): Roberta Johnson, Dennis Ward, Lisa Gardiner, Sandra Henderson, Charlie Fitzpatrick, Steve Peterson, John Snow The NASA-sponsored Modeling in the Geosciences Workshop Series for middle and high school teachers offered instruction on methods of incorporating simple models and Geographic Information Systems into Earth Science classrooms to explore Earth system concepts. The workshop series included a summer workshop and two follow-up workshops during the subsequent school year. The workshops facilitated the use of modeling and GIS technology within secondary classrooms in ways that are relevant to the curriculum needs of educators. In this presentation, workshop instructors will share some of the benefits and challenges of taking this technology into the classroom, as well as share plans for an online professional development course currently in development.
