Abstract
Mapping Meteorites with ArcExplorer--Java Edition for Education in the Secondary Classroom Track: Teaching with GIS Author(s): Dennis Ward One of the perceived obstacles to implementing GIS in the classroom is cost. Lightweight GIS data viewers are freely available but typically do not allow the user to create and save datasets and shapefiles. Another obstacle is the cross-platform nature of the scholastic computing environment. Clearly, a low-cost cross-platform application is needed to facilitate GIS use in the classroom. In October of 2004, Esri released ArcExplorer--Java Edition for Education, for both the Windows and Mac OSX operating systems. This presentation will introduce you to ArcExplorer--Java Edition for Education, using it to map meteorite falls throughout the U.S. You will learn how to use ArcExplorer--Java Edition for Education to display and query both local and online data sources, as well as how to create shapefiles from tabular data. This standards-based activity has been successfully used with students in grades 4-12. Access to all materials needed to implement this activity in your classroom will be provided.
