Track: Designing Curriculum & Degree Programs
Author(s): Alper Cabuk, Servet Karabag

One of the most important gaps in Turkish educational system for some time has been the lack of up-to-date National Education Programs for Junior and High Schools. Moreover, the current ones have a disorganized content and are not uniform. Geography programs are being reorganized within the educational revamp action started by the National Ministry of Education in 2004. The main goal for the high school geography program is to teach geographical information, which would provide students with necessary knowledge to understand their world. Particularly, when we consider that we live in the era of information, the importance of GIS and its integration with the education program is better understood. The proposed program will introduce the earth in local, national, regional and global levels and scales using GIS. This paper will examine the importance of GIS for re-designing a national geography education policy underlining the case studies in Turkey.
