Batch Parsing XML Metadata for Cataloging GIS Data
Track: Using GIS in Libraries & Museums
Author(s): Jeff Essic

Libraries commonly facilitate geospatial data discovery using web-based catalogs that provide multiple fielding capabilities. Since 1998, NCSU Libraries have been using a 400+ term thesaurus scheme called GIS Lookup that describes data features from which users select desired coverages. While innovative for its time, the GIS Lookup is composed of static webpages, is complex to maintain, and does not benefit from XML metadata files which increasingly accompany geospatial data. In preparation for developing a new lookup system based on a php/mysql architecture, an in-house web tool was developed that parses many XML files at once and allows the librarian to create a custom table of text entries from the selected fields. By creating an XSL stylesheet on-the-fly and then extracting desired metadata elements in a batch process, this tool significantly reduces the time required to create new cataloging records which update the GIS Lookup database.
