Abstract
Torture Not Working? Methods to Increase Faculty GIS Adoption Track: Teacher Education and Educational Research Author(s): Bob Vawter After the first year of a system-wide site license with Esri, it became apparent that the Virginia Community College System needed to develop a multi-level support structure to encourage and help faculty adopt GIS in their courses. Level one of the support structure called for a VCCS GIS help site, which was made public in December. Level two calls for an in-house, two-day introduction training session to show how VCCS faculty might use GIS in their courses. Level three involves heavy exposure of GIS during our next VCCS New Horizon Conference which is attended by 700+ faculty and administrators each year. Level four involves delivering weekly two-hour trainings sessions over eight weeks. Session attendees will receive copies of training session outlines, summary of results, and access to recordings of the training sessions. The VCCS consists of 23 colleges that enroll 62.7% of all undergraduate students in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
