Abstract
Assessment of the Integration of Multiple Technologies on Cartographic Teaching Track: Teaching with GIS Author(s): Brian Bailey Teaching the principles of cartography and training in computer mapping technologies, such as Esri's ArcGIS, can be integrated with multiple technologies to provide students with a more powerful learning experience. In order to leverage computer hardware and software to create a student-centered environment, the Computer Cartography course as part of Geospatial Information Science Program at the United States Military Academy, West Point used TegrityNotes software, a technology that captures the instructor's multi-media presentation, allows the students to take digital notes on Tablet PCs, and synchronizes the student notes with the classroom presentation. The intent of this study was to show improvement in individual student performance and allow more content to be covered in the computer cartography course. Based on classroom observations and survey results, education-centric technology and sophisticated mapping software require the instructor and the student to have better than introductory skills managing hardware, software, and scientific data.
