Abstract
Teen Science: Student-Centered Learning Through Community-Based Research Track: Community Projects and Partnerships Author(s): Diana Cregar, Janice Moses The Institute for Community and Regional Development (ICARD) at Eastern Michigan University and Willow Run Community Schools (WRCS) are bringing together university faculty, technology specialists, middle- and high-school teachers, graduate/undergraduate mentors, and local businesses and governments to provide project- and inquiry-based STEM instruction for students in grades 8-12. Building on current ICARD/WRCS collaboration that has established a two-site (elementary and middle school) 21st Century Community Learning Center, the program involves participants in student-centered learning through community-based research projects that use advanced information technologies to support problem- and project-based inquiry in the sciences, engineering, and math. Objectives include providing broad, competency-based technology skills in GIS and other analytic and communication applications for integrating and presenting spatial and other quantitative data as well as engaging students in community-based research projects that provide a setting for self-directed learning, critical analysis, and reflective decision-making.
