GIS Teacher Education: Notes from the Field V Track: Teacher Education and Educational Research Author(s): Marsha Alibrandi, Shannon White Continuing research on teachers and students who have participated in GIS in Education courses and activities. Now incorporating second generation teaching assistants at the graduate and middle school levels and new web-based GIS tools, a team of constructivist educators assesses GIS "uptake" across disciplinary lines and over time in schools where graduates of the GIS in Education course currently teach. Over a 5-year period and several iterations of the semester-long Eucation course that embeds GIS instruction as an instructional technology, course participants have integrated GIS to varying degrees. How sustainable has GIS integration been over the course of the participants' experiences? What do they now identify as needs for continued support? Telephone and email interviews with a sample of participants priovide insights into futire directions for sustainable uptake of GIS.
