The Geography of Charter Schools and the Nonprofit Sector in New York City
Track: Teacher Education and Educational Research
Author(s): Charisse Gulosino, James Crocker

New York City has an extensive nonprofit industry. The exploratory analysis of charter schools in New York City considers an analysis which immerses the data in context--mapping the different types of non-profit organizations in the community districts served by charters and the locational decisions of charter schools with a community service orientation (mission-oriented). The initial analysis of charter schools reveals that they locate near high densities of non-profit organization activities in housing, human service, community improvement, and education.

This research examines a spatial approach to understanding the patterns of support/organizational base of charter schools with a community service orientation, all played out on local and socio-economic landscapes. GIS, relatively new to educational research, offers researchers the ability to represent point data (i.e., the high density of non-profit organizations in areas served by charter schools) within the underlying social geography. ArcGIS 9 was used.
