Integrated Spatial Technologies Training in Agriculture
Track: Designing Curriculum & Degree Programs
Author(s): William Budke

The outcomes of two U.S. Dept. of Agriculture grant projects to train students in GIS/GPS and integrated spatially distributed sensors for data collection, monitoring, and decion-making will be discussed. Ventura College and Allan Hancock College have won two grants to develop curriculum and create audio/visual modules to be used to train agriculture students in the use of advanced spatial technologies for sampling agricultural environmental parameters. Student interns work with various growers and support companies in the application of advanced GPS receivers, ruggedized laptops running GIS software, and real-time envionmental data sensors. Upon completion of the grant programs, students gain valuable skills, establish links to local employers, and receive a Certificate of Completion.
