Boston: A City Through Time
Track: Teaching with GIS
Author(s): Patrick Malone, Kelly Gagnon

This presentation will describe and demonstrate the use of the online David Rumsey Historical Map Collection in a freshman course at Brown University. On the Rumsey site, a simple GIS interface enables students to overlay and compare historic maps with contemporary maps and modern digital imagery. Using this GIS capability, the Brown students explored Boston's physical growth from the colonial period, the changing relationship of its urban patterns to natural features, and its implementation of urban design and planning concepts.
