Abstract
GIS Services in the College Environment: Organizational Models and Alternatives Track: Using GIS in Libraries & Museums Author(s): Carol Cady While geographic information systems are well-established at most research universities, GIS services have recently been integrated into instructional activities of many smaller colleges. This paper will explore several organizational models in implementing a GIS in the small-college environment. We will begin with a brief literature review, report the results of a survey of GIS professionals and present a rationale for locating GIS services within the library. Several implementation issues will be discussed: (1) GIS as a research literacy tool in a liberal arts curriculum; (2) collaboration with other departments on campus; and (3) funding, staffing, and budgeting for initiation and maintenance of a GIS. The library model pursued at St. Lawrence University, a liberal arts college in upstate New York, will be contrasted with other organizations providing GIS. By drawing upon data from an existing program, we seek to provide comparative information and explore alternative models for the delivery of GIS services.
