Abstract
GIS as a Library Service: Where Do We Begin? Track: Using GIS in Libraries & Museums Author(s): Clara McLeod, Stefan Falke An academic library is the information nucleus of a college or university. Developments in computer and information technology have changed and continues to change the library's role. Defining the library's role as a campus facility for GIS is the next logical step in providing library services and information resources. This paper will discuss the early-stage challenges associated with introducing GIS as a library service at Washington University in St. Louis. Some of these challenges include obtaining support for GIS from the library administration, faculty, and the library staff; the collection and provision of GIS software and data; the development of library user education programs; and hiring, recruiting or staffing appropriately. This paper will also discuss a future vision for GIS as a library service at Washington University.
