Community-Based GIS Applications at Ugunja Community Resource Centre
Track: Community Projects and Partnerships
Author(s): Omondi Aggrey

Nyasanda Community School is a small school in Western Kenya where the pupils are subsidized by donations to the school. The School works in tandem with the Ugunja Community Resource Centre (UCRC). At Nyasanda students are trained in the usual curricula but also receive education in areas that are most relevant to the local community. UCRC GIS project is currently developing a participatory GIS system to train current students and other local users in the use of GIS. In the current phase of the project, UCRC is aided by M'Lis Flynn who has experience in community GIS projects in Australia. The use of ArcView would not only give students greater skills to seek employment and develop their own businesses but would also give them opportunities to develop applications related to improved farm management, natural resource management, mapping and isolating health issues (such as malaria incidence) and land-use planning.
