Abstract
Historic Mapping and Historic Awards--GIS in High School Track: Community Projects and Partnerships Author(s): Ronald Fenenga The Environmental and Spatial Technologies (EAST) class at Santa Ynez High, using complex technologies, experts, original documents and GIS techniques, is involved in a historic problem solving project. In discovering the water system at Mission Santa Inés, the students have pushed back the bounds of history and developed a complete mapping of a 200 year old mystery. After mapping the aqueduct for the first time, the students have presented at Archaeological Conferences, received the 2004 Governor's Award for Historic Preservation (the only high school to ever receive this award), won the 2004 Geospatial Solutions GIS Applications Competition and their findings published. Students used ArcView 3.3 to determine possible locations, photographed the sites and cataloged the artifacts. "This is the best example of the use of historical research, geophysics and archaeology to solve a particular problem that I have EVER seen!"
