Abstract

GIS in High School Education: Developing Community Projects
Track: Community Projects and Partnerships
Author(s): Mila Lynne Powell

High school EAST students in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, use GIS to serve their community through various mapping projects. Students have taken earlier mapping projects and added new analytical dimensions to them. For example, for their fire hydrants project, students also analyzed one-way streets, narrow streets that fire trucks cannot use, and the city’s main water lines. A County Technology Center was set up by the students to help train the city’s emergency personnel in GPS and GIS.
