Community Informatics and GIS: Exploring a New Intersection
Track: Community Projects and Partnerships
Author(s): Kate Williams, Tracey Hughes

Using quantitative and qualitative spatial analysis is an emerging paradigm in community informatics (CI). Building one of the first CI GIS datasets, we used ArcGIS 9.1 to analyze 606 technology projects across the United States funded by the Technology Opportunities Program and launched by medical centers, universities, public utilities, tribal councils, and other community institutions.

The impetus for this analysis stems from a collaboration between researchers at the University of Michigan School of Information and University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign, in partnership with the Technology Opportunities Program, to investigate and address the digital divide.
