Abstract

A Research-Based Scope/Sequence for GIS Use in Grades 4–12
Track: Designing GIS Curriculum for K–12 Education
Author(s): Bob Kolvoord, Kathryn Keranen

Many teachers and schools are struggling with how to spread the use of GIS and other geospatial technologies beyond the classroom of the early adopters (and frequent attendees of the Esri EdUC). However, while some good curriculum materials exist, there has not been a thorough attempt to try to look across grade levels to both develop GIS skills and integrate them with key content in science, social studies, math, and technology. We have developed a scope and sequence of activities/curriculum connections for the use of GIS, starting in grade 4 and proceeding through to grade 12 to attempt to fill this gap. We have also attempted to correlate the scope/sequence with current research in the learning sciences. By connecting the curriculum with the research literature, we hope to provide support to districts that want to broaden their use of GIS in the classroom.
