Abstract

Sea Cliff Erosion and Student Projections
Track: Community Projects and Partnerships
Author(s): Ronald Fenenga

The Environmental and Spatial Technologies (EAST) class at Santa Ynez High School used GPS technologies, experts, original documents, ArcView software, and student curiosity in a community service project mapping the eroding sea cliff edge in the community of Isla Vista, California. The class established a baseline by plotting the cliff base and edge from Coal Oil Point to Campus Point and then projecting the rates of erosion over time. This is original data that can be used to help make informed decisions in the community. A team of 18 students met with various professionals, presented to many groups, overcame problems and defended their findings. They had to produce documents and an informative DVD, develop protocols, and coordinate with the County and UCSB scientists. In August 2005, the students' work was featured by the professional journal Geospatial Solutions as one of the top three uses of GIS technologies.
