AbstractWhy Can’t I Press a Button and Make It Work? Track: GIS for Administration & Planning Author(s): Janae Nakata For the past two years, Chesapeake Public Schools has been creating optimized bus routes using ArcView 3.x and the SmartR bus routing extension. This has been a joint venture between the Transportation Department and the Planning and Development Department’s GIS Group. This undertaking resulted in several discoveries including the need for a consistent and well-defined transportation policy, a good set of parameters for routing, and additional information from schools and bus drivers. This presentation will highlight the lessons the GIS Group has learned, especially how important it is to educate administrators and school personnel about what GIS can and cannot do.
