Detroit Public Schools (DPS) is developing an integrated school transportation management system (ISTMS) to achieve safe, efficient, and timely delivery of student transportation services. Its geodatabase module provides integration tools that manage data connection and synchronization between the student geodatabase, the transportation needs, the fleet routing and scheduling data, and the GPS data. It is designed to perform comprehensive operation and analysis functions for student transportation routing and scheduling; GPS data analysis and vehicle tracking; rider eligibility; and exception reports on safety, timing, and efficiency. A Web-enabled system allows transportation administrators and the public to view bus stop locations and transportation information. Furthermore, districtwide access to this integrated geographic decision support system enables all school district management units including the Office of Research, Evaluation, and Assessment, to leverage the geocoded student data layers to better understand learning disparities at the student level rather than the school building level.
