Abstract

K–12 GIS Programs and Public Outreach
Track: Teaching with GIS in K–12 Education
Author(s): David Wicks, Shannon Gilkey , Shawn Canaday

This session will present three initiatives that have high school GIS school career students actively participating in public outreach programs. The first initiative involves the use of an Esri-developed exhibit “GIS and Disaster Management.” High School students facilitated an exhibit for the Kentucky State Fair involving over 100,000 participants. Then the same exhibit was the central focus of the 2005 GIS Day program for five high schools. The second initiative involves the development of an ArcIMS site for our metro park system and the development of MapPaks for elementary outdoor classrooms. The third example is a historically black high school and their work in mapping street and campus trees in downtown Louisville. These initiatives not only promote the use of GIS in our community, but provide significant opportunities for public speaking and interaction for the participating high school students.
