The City of Tsukuba is well known as the Tsukuba Science City constructed deliberately. We found the beautiful reprints of old maps around Tsukuba, which were published in 1883. Then, we started the area study investigating the historical changes in Tsukuba by using GIS. In 2003, we made the basemaps and studied the changing of roads, and we supposed the landscape inthe old days. In 2004, we investigated the distribution of temples and shrines. By considering the meaning of it we gathered that the number of them is relevant to the number of old communities that the present Tsukuba consists of. In 2005, we studied the change of the travel time to Tokyo from each point in Tsukuba and made the time maps in some stages of the developing transportation system. We would like to present our activities and how the students benefitted.
