Treasure Hunting and Other Fun Science Labs With GPS/GIS
Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education
Author(s): Nancy Thorpe

A good method of introducing GIS and GPS technology in the classroom is to perform standard science laboratories enhanced with these technologies. This presentation will demonstrate examples of newly developed science labs and modified existing labs that use either GIS and/or GPS such as geocaching in geology and tree identification in biology. Research-oriented labs will also be discussed. ArcView 3.2 and ArcPad are the GIS software used for these labs. The presentation will include information on choice and preparation of basemaps, integration of software and hardware, implementation of labs, and students' successes and comments.
