Teaching GIS for Land Surveying
Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education
Author(s): Zhanjing (John) Yu

GIS is a very important tool for land surveying since both deal with spatial data. GIS originated from automatic mapmaking, which involves surveying work. As part of a project from the National Science Foundation, a GIS for land surveying course was developed and taught at Evergreen Valley College using the ArcView software. The course introduces the fundamentals of a geographic information system as it relates to civil engineering and surveying and how the Multipurpose Cadastre (MPC), Land Information System (LIS), and geographic information system (GIS) fit together. Geodetic reference frame, basemap, cadastral overlay, and linkage mechanisms are also discussed. The ArcGIS software is taught and used in the course. GIS applications and existing case studies are presented. FGDC standards and future trends of GIS are addressed.
