Abstract

Genealogy, GIS, and Libraries
Track: Using GIS in Libraries & Museums
Author(s): Michele Shular

Genealogists love maps and are frequent patrons of map and geography libraries when conducting their family history research. They seek out a variety of geographical materials to discover their family origins, locate ancestral residences, determine historical boundaries, and identify placename changes, as well as examine ancestral migration trails and settlement patterns. This presentation will assist GIS Librarians with new application ideas that can be useful when assisting patrons specifically engaged in genealogical research. A variety of map examples will be presented to illustrate how GIS technology can be used in a historical context and how it is possible to build a personalized family history atlas.
