How do we get pre- and in-service teachers to use GIS as a tool for critical thinking and spatial analysis? In California, the content of courses required for teachers is standards based. Now, in response to the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) initiative, teachers must also evidence competence through high-stakes testing. GIS can be introduced through content courses like Introduction to Economics, Introduction to Environmental Studies, or U.S. and World History. Methods courses in social studies, science, and math can explore lesson plans using GIS. Technology workshops and advanced technology courses can provide teachers with hands-on experiences using GIS tools and ways to access the Geography Network and other data sources. The University of Redlands, School of Education, is exploring ways to integrate GIS into the curriculum of the various aspects of the program to better prepare teachers.
