Abstract

GLOBE at Night
Track: Teaching with GIS in K–12 Education
Author(s): Dennis Ward, Kirsten Meymaris, Randy Russell, Charlie Fitzpatrick, Sandra Henderson, Susan Gallagher

The GLOBE Program, Esri, the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO), Centro de Apoyo a la Didactica de la Astronomia (CADIAS), and Windows to the Universe collaboratively sponsored an international science campaign investigating light pollution. This hands-on learning activity extended the traditional classroom and school day with a week of nighttime observations last March involving teachers, students, and their families. By locating and observing specific constellations, students from around the world learned how the lights in their community contribute to light pollution, exploring the relationship between science, technology, and their society. Students were able to participate in this global scientific campaign by submitting their observations through an online database, allowing for authentic worldwide research and analysis by participating scientists. This session will share how students and scientists across the globe are using GIS tools such as ArcExplorer—Java Education Edition to explore and analyze the results of this exciting campaign.
