Track: Educational Research and Teacher Education
Author(s): Lavollée Madeleine

G.I.S.A.S. (Geographical Information Systems—Applications for Schools) is a three-year pilot project funded by the European Commission to develop innovative ways to introduce GIS in secondary school education and teacher training. Its thematic content focuses on water quality. Eight schools in eight countries in Europe make field analysies of their local river, learn to create GIS databases, and organize the eight layers in their digital map. They cooperate on a collaborative workspace.

The Department of Geography, University of Helsinki, coordinates the project. Researchers elaborate on pedagogical support and developes monthly courses in English for the teachers and their students (around 400 participants), who translate it in their national language.

G.I.S.A.S., a multidisciplinary and multilanguage project, is disseminated on national, European, and international levels as a possible model to integrate GIS in education and training.
