Abstract

Teaching about Natural Hazards Using GIS-Based Case Studies
Track: Teaching with GIS in Higher Education
Author(s): C. Scott Walker, Michelle Hall

We are developing four GIS-based case studies that investigate natural hazards using ArcGIS. The case studies explore tornadoes, including an in-depth analysis of the 1999 Oklahoma City tornado outbreak; the 1994 Northridge, California, earthquake; Hurricane Katrina; and the 2004 Indonesian tsunami. Building on our experience developing the SAGUARO curriculum materials, these case studies emphasize teaching science concepts through analysis of rich and current geospatial datasets and supporting video and still imagery. This presentation will provide an overview of the case studies design and development process and introduce some of the custom tools we have implemented to facilitate the use of GIS in educational settings.
