Abstract

GIS and Youth Development: Creating Hope for Youth
Track: Community Projects and Partnerships
Author(s): Tarren Anderson

Hopeworks is a nonprofit organization using technology as a means to youth empowerment and community development. Hopeworks works with at risk youth and young adults (both in high school as well as dropouts), training in the basics and complexities of GIS using ArcGIS (and extensions), ArcPad and the Web. The training is guided by real-world projects on which the trainees work for other organizations in Camden, New Jersey, and beyond. Youth gain confidence and experience working in a technical capacity, giving them hope for their future. Our presentation will focus on the specifics of running such a program, the literacy component of our program and the benefit of GIS skills to youth.
