Abstract

Systematic Curriculum & Instructional Development (SCID) Using DACUM
Track: Designing GIS Curriculum for Higher Education
Author(s): John Johnson

After DACUM, what comes next? After successfully using DACUM to identify the core competencies required of an entry-level GIS employee, San Diego Mesa College is using the Systematic Curriculum & Instructional Development (SCID) process to develop a performance-based curriculum for its Scalable Skills GIS Certificate Program. The SCID process involves five stages—Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation. DACUM, an acronym for Developing A CUrriculuM, was part of phase I and involved using a panel of expert workers to identify the core duties and tasks of a GIS technician. SCID is a methodology for translating this information into a comprehensive, skills-based GIS program. This Advance Technology Education project is funded by the National Science Foundation.
