The DEVELOP National Internship Program at NASA Ames Research Center
Track: Community Projects and Partnerships
Author(s): Cindy Schmidt, Jay Skiles

DEVELOP is a NASA-sponsored internship program using remote sensing and earth science information in a GIS to demonstrate to federal, state, local, and tribal government agencies how earth science technology and data can be used for solutions to local problems. DEVELOP is student-run and student-led, with advisors and mentors from the public and private sector. This competitive program is offered at four NASA Centers--Langley, Ames, Stennis, and Goddard--and accepts students ranging from juniors in high school to graduate level. DEVELOP students work with government agencies on problems such as invasive species, fire management, air quality, and various climate change issues. Students benefit from learning new science and technology, learning to work in teams, project management skills, and how to communicate well with members of the public, political officials, scientists, and media. The community benefits from learning how earth science data and technology can be applied to local problems.
