Abstract

Animated Maps for School Demography
Track: GIS for Administration & Planning
Author(s): Richard Lycan

One of the responsibilities of a school demographer is to help citizens understand how the social ecology of their community is changing and how that may affect their schools. Animated maps may help in the understanding of such temporal and spatial trends. Data for the Portland Public Schools District in Oregon were used to develop such a series of maps. The maps show trends in births, enrollment, cohort progression ratios, and housing development. One example is a map animation showing the progression of children from birth age to entry into kindergarten, as affected by migration and public school capture rates. Several examples will be shown and the author will argue that the animated maps provide insights beyond that from static maps.
