AbstractThe Effect of Spatial Thinking on K-12 Students Track: Teaching with GIS in Schools Author(s): Bob Bednarz, Nikki Williams, Sarah Bednarz, Andrew Klein, Joni Kincaid, Tavia Prouhet, Michelle Simms, Anthony Filippi, Adriana Martinez This presentation reports on the impact of purposely encouraging spatial thinking in middle and high school classrooms by introducing students to techniques and technologies such as remote sensing, GIS, ISSEarthKAM, iGIS, and GPS. Graduate-student Fellows of the AGSSS (Advancing Geospatial Skills in Science and Social Sciences) program, a National Science Foundation-funded GK-12 project, help teachers develop new, or customize existing, curricular materials; assist in the classroom during spatial-thinking lessons; and offer ideas about additional beneficial applications of spatial thinking in both science and social science classes. Changes in attitudes toward spatial thinking by both students and teachers who participated in the program will be discussed as well as student self-assessments about changes in their ability to think spatially as a result of their AGSSS-based learning experiences. In addition, Fellows' observations of classroom activities and student performance will be presented.
