Lessons Learned from the ITEST Ocean Explorers Project
Track: Teaching with GIS in Schools
Author(s): Steven Moore, Jenny Brady

This paper will present summative evaluation findings of the Ocean Explorers project, an effort funded by the Information Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST) program of the National Science Foundation. The goal of the project was to use ocean science and GIS as hooks to introduce information technologies to middle and high school teachers in California and Arizona. This paper will review lessons learned from working with a single cohort of 60 teachers as they constructed and implemented ArcView 3.x, ArcGIS 9.x, and My World projects over a three-year period. Results of in-depth case studies of three team's experiences will be discussed. A focus of the paper will be on the barriers teachers experienced in implementing GIS as an instructional technology and how the project worked to help teachers overcome those barriers. Growth of a corps of master teachers from the project and future directions will be outlined.
