AbstractOnline Community for GIS in Public Education Track: Designing Curriculum for Schools Author(s): Shannon Gilkey, David Wicks This session will present one initiative that will link GIS educators around the world. Jefferson County Public Schools has developed a two and four-year model that implements GIS into high school to career curriculum. This initiative will launch an online resource for school districts and educators to implement GIS into public education with a focus on School to Career initiatives. Not only does this model provide the scope and sequence of courses, but also resources for involving local GIS firms, higher education institutions, and government agencies. Examples for developing internship and cooperative programs with local businesses are featured. The website will also include pacing guides, lesson plans, and mapping projects to jumpstart the GIS classroom. There will be discussion experiences, ideas, and activities to promote education in GIS.
