Abstract

Digital Geospatial Collection Development Policies: Who Needs One and Why
Track: Using GIS in Libraries and Museums
Author(s): Tracey Erwin

While digital geospatial data is increasingly important to users, few library Collection Development Policies thoroughly address geospatial data. Libraries seeking to create or expand their digital geospatial holdings will benefit from developing a Geospatial Collection Development Policy for their institution. Librarians at the University of California at Santa Barbara and Stanford University have written a Geospatial Collection Development Policy for general use. Included will be a discussion about selection, evaluation, and prioritization; scope of coverage; metadata; sources of data; and collection of GIS datasets.
