Oregon 4-H: Getting Youth Involved in Spatial Thinking!
Track: Community Projects and Partnerships
Author(s): Lisa Conroy, Cecilia Giron

Oregon 4-H youth will present their experiences, goals, and GPS-GIS projects along with a learning model which includes a ramped approach to spatial thinking (map-reading/orienteering, GPS, and GIS).

Washington County Oregon (urban) 4-H Tech Wizards

(www.4-HTechWizards.org) project designed and utilized a culturally and developmentally appropriate experiential learning model, engaging over 400 Latino youth (annually) in spatial technologies. Tech Wizard youth work with GIS professionals to develop a FEMA certified disaster plan for their school, manage a new watershed, and continue work on a Street Tree inventory.

Crook County Oregon (rural) uses geospatial technologies to help locate homeless assistance services and for disaster shelter tracking.

Students will present their Esri GIS and Community Atlas projects.
