Abstract

Developing Web-based GIS CAREER awareness modules for high school students
Track: Teaching with GIS in Schools
Author(s): Ming-Hsiang Tsou

This paper introduced an effort to create Web-based GIS CAREER awareness learning modules for high school teachers and students. The development and the implementation of the Web-based GIS awareness modules (by ArcIMS and related applications) are a collaborative effort between San Diego Mesa College and San Diego State University, funded by a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant for the purpose of promoting geospatial career awareness among students and teachers. Through the four Web-based GIS learning modules, we hope to provide High School students with a basic introduction of geographic information system (GIS) technologies and to promote GIS career awareness at the High School level. The four on-line "GIS Career Awareness Learning Modules" can be incorporated into existing high school classes to provide students with an informative, stimulating, hands-on experience.
