Abstract

Real Science in the Classroom: The Narragansett Bay Coyote Study
Track: Teaching with GIS in Schools
Author(s): Lyn Malone, Numi Mitchell

The Narragagnsett Bay Coyote Study is a scientific and educational project created by The Conservation Agency in Jamestown, RI. Under the leadership of wildlife biologist, Numi Mitchell, it has become a model environmental education project receiving attention and recognition from educators and environmental groups around the country. In the study, 10 coyotes on Conanicut and Aquidneck Islands were fitted with GPS collars making it possible to track the coyotes and to post point data of their locations in near real time on the Internet. Students then used GIS to map, explore, and analyze that data to learn about coyote movements and ranges, diet, population density, den sites, habitats, and behaviors. The goal of the project is to provide local legislators and DEM with the data they need to make informed management decisions. This presentation will provide an overview of the project and the challenges it faced in its educational implementation.
