AbstractA Spatial Analysis of Schools, Subway Network and Locations Track: GIS for Administration & Planning Author(s): Charisse Gulosino, Jim Crocker The study explores the accessibility of prospective charter school sites to prospective students. Current NYC Department of Education data is used to determine the spatial terrain of public elementary school performance. Unlike NYC public school students that are bound to schools in their immediate neighborhoods, students may attend charter schools throughout NYC. The spatial analysis is superimposed on the subway public transportation network to produce a subway map of stops and lines quantified by the performance of nearby public schools. This unique aspect of charter schools has not been fully explored in terms of subway accessibility. Low performance public school neighborhoods may be sources of prospective charter school students as well as potential charter school sites. Accessibility mapping may be used in marketing the school to potential students in connected high need areas. Other site criteria such as real estate and nonprofits may be applied to further narrow site choices.
