Author(s): Wade Hawkins

SAIT's Applied Degree Program in GIS has adopted a constructivist learning approach, creating an environment and experience that encourages students to collaboratively discover and construct knowledge. Students are challenged to consider themselves a part of a community of learners, working together to expand their knowledge, further their own personal growth and professional development, while improving interpersonal skills.

This pedagogical paradigm establishes in-depth GIS knowledge transfer through hands-on, instructor facilitated, and case study based approaches. This model transfers information through theoretical content, software demonstrations, case study examples, project work and problems requiring applied research.

This paradigm has proven success in providing the learner with the skills develop creative and innovative solutions to meet the current industry demands.
