Track: Community Projects and Partnerships
Author(s): Ashok Wadwani

The Geospatial Workforce Information System (GIWIS) is the nation's first and only online geospatial workforce information network that enables educators, industry and workforce experts to communicate the opportunities, skills required and programs that will help motivate workers to enter the geospatial industry in the Denver area. It provides prospective industry workers with the job-development resources, opportunities and contacts they need to explore and enter the exciting and fast-growing industry of geospatial technology.

The primary purpose of GIWIS is to foster collaborative partnerships among legislators, economic development leaders, business and industry, and educators to develop solutions to the workforce challenges and labor shortages currently facing the geospatial industry.

GIWIS is a project funded by the Department of Labor through a $700,000 grant awarded to the Geospatial Information & Technology Association and the Association of American Geographers. The study identified the needs, challenges and priorities in building and strengthening the geospatial workforce.
