AbstractGIS as a Compulsory Element in Norwegian Secondary Schools Track: Teaching with GIS in Schools Author(s): Per Erik Lerseth This paper addresses the potential for GIS in Norwegian secondary schools in light of the 2006 national curriculum reform. GIS is now listed as a compulsory element for teachers to include in geography. This has sparked a demand for GIS-related learning material and in-service courses among geography teachers. In order to meet this demand a project in 2007, initiated by Geodata, will develop learning material and in-service GIS courses based on ArcGIS Explorer. Pedagogical practices and structural changes within Norwegian secondary schools provide good ground for a web-based GIS-solution in regard to both software and access to digital map material. In Norway there is a marked difference between lower and higher education in relation to using GIS as an educational tool. This project seeks to change this situation and establish a platform for GIS at lower educational level as well.
